Autorenporträt
Frederick Leroy Leydorf was born in Toledo, Ohio, the grandson of a German immigrant. Mary MacKenzie Malcolm was born in the Philippines, the only child of a prominent American diplomat. They met and married while undergraduates at the University of Michigan and went on to receive advanced degrees in law and medicine, respectively, from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Mary was one of the first women to receive a medical degree from UCLA at a time when most medical schools still excluded females. They had five children-Bob, Bill, Katie, Tom, and Dede-in seven years between 1958 to 1965 while Mary was completing her pediatric residency. Both enjoyed long and successful careers and earned many accolades. Fred served as a senior partner in a prestigious Los Angeles law firm and had many high profile clients, including former President Richard Nixon while he was still in office. Mary founded and operated her own pediatric neurology clinic. They lived a long and happy life together, and after retirement celebrated the birth of four grandchildren. Mary passed away in 2013, just two months shy of their 60th wedding anniversary. Both agreed that marrying well was the key to their wonderful life.
