After losing their land, their money, and many of their relatives to the Highland Potato Famine during the nineteenth century, a young Scottish family immigrates to America to begin a fresh chapter and cultivate new friendships during their first Christmas in New England. After little Connie and Ian venture out on a snowy Christmas Eve to earn money to buy gifts for their loved ones by shoveling snow, the children befriend several townspeople. Later that evening when tragedy strikes the town, Paw and Mum guide their children to help others through tragedy and loss. Through their strength of family, traditions, values, and heartfelt understanding of their past experiences, the family gains valuable wisdom about the true meaning of the holiday. In this poignant tale set during the nineteenth century, a Scottish family new to America learns the value of giving from the heart during their first Christmas celebration.
