This book documents the qualitative analysis of reading strategies of engineering students attempting a cloze test. The study was undertaken at the researcher's workplace (PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, India), as a part of her Masters in Philosophy degree requirements. The participants of the study are first year engineering students from different branches of engineering. The learners were interviewed following the study to identify the difficulties faced while comprehending a cloze test. The learner protocols have been analyzed to highlight the successful and unsuccessful strategies adopted by them to comprehend the text. The transcripts of some of the interviews are provided (unedited). The study provides certain interesting insights into the learners' reading processes and difficulties faced by them at the linguistic and conceptual levels. Certain remedial measures to enable learners tackle cloze tests and to improve their overall reading comprehension have also beensuggested.

Dr.Kalpana is an Assistant professor in English at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore. She has an M.A in English, a Bachelor s degree in Education, an M.Phil in English and a PG Diploma in ELT. She also holds a Doctorate degree in the area of ELT. Her other areas of interests include creative writing and yoga. She has two awards to her credit.
