Castor is one of the most important non edible oil seed crop of the country. Variability present in the population is the prerequisite in response to selection for the crop improvement programme. Selection of superior varieties or populations will be possible only when adequate variability exists in the gene pool. Hence, the insight into magnitude of variability present in a gene pool of a crop species is of utmost importance to plant breeders for initiating a judicious plant breeding programme. Correlation studies provide better understanding of yield components which helps the plant breeder during selection. Wilt screening is important to identify resistant genotypes. The causal organism was established as Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ricini. It can cause a yield loss of up to 80 per cent depending on the stage at which the plants wilt. Being a soil-borne pathogen, chemical control is difficult and non-economical. Cultivation of wilt resistant cultivars has proved to be an effective strategy to minimize the loss.
