Human rights are significant for every Man ever since he came into existence in this world until he breaths last. It has emerged as solemn legal premise after the Second World War. Law has been framed to protect the human rights due to its significance both nationally and internationally. Police is entrusted with the duty of protecting the life, liberty and security of persons in a State. However the protectors, many a times, tum out to be violators. The Police in India are known for their violations of human rights. There is always hue and cry about violation of human rights by the police in India. The research study attempts to unravel the extent of the human rights violation by the police in India generally, and in Kerala particularly. The study also focuses on the reasons for the violations, the adequacies of the existing law to prevent violations, the problems related with prevention of the violations by the law effectively. The study reveals that there takes place a large number of human rights violations by the police. The existing law, to a certain extent, attempts to prevent the violations of human rights by the police. However, more additions to the existing laws are necessary. The lack of proper implementation of the existing law intensifies the problem. There should be clear mechanisms to properly monitoring and implementing the law.
