There is an inherent desire by most Kenyans to own decent and affordable houses. On average, the cost of building materials for a housing structure comprises about 50 percent of the total cost of the building. The high cost is normally attributed to the high prices of cement. A majority of the Kenyan population cannot afford cement, which is a major building binder for housing and construction in general .This has lead to the mushrooming of slums such as Kibera in Nairobi-Kenya. There is an increasing demand for decent housing as the shanty houses poses various health challenges.
