In the last years the EU went through a process of significant territorial reconfiguration as a consequence of the intensified cooperation between regions beyond national borders. The European Spatial Development Perspective certainly gave the momentum for such changes. Even though the ESDP never gained a statutory force at the EU level, it clearly stimulated pioneering actions towards more meaningful provisions for a spatial development across Member States and their regions. Eventually, it paved a way to the demarcation of 13 transnational zones within the EU and the launch of the INTERREG initiative to support cooperation within these territories. This book provides a unique glance at the transnational cooperation within the North Sea Region and investigates the impact of the EU financial support allocated to the region through the INTERREG IIIB North Sea Programme.
