In 1970, the author set out to travel around the world. Over the next seven years, he visited more than eighty countries. First he made the overland trip to Australia, where he worked variously as a labourer, a bank clerk and a taxi driver. Then he went around Australia and New Zealand, flew via the Pacific Islands to Mexico and made his way through Central and South America as far south as Tierra del Fuego. After returning home, he replenished his coffers by working on a North Sea oil-rig. He then hitched across Europe again, made his way from Cairo to Cape Town and ultimately reached Australia, where he worked again as a taxi driver. He travelled through the Far East and on to Nepal, where he made the trek to Everest. Finally he had one last year of freedom. He flew to Canada, hitched to Alaska and back and then found work on a gas drilling rig in the Canadian north. After returning home again, he bought an old van which he drove around Europe as far south as Morocco and as far north as Sweden.
