This monograph analyzes the current design of the division cavalry squadron. The purpose is to determine if the air cavalry organization for the Army-of-Excellence (AOE) cavalry squadron is structured in the most effective manner for the execution of the squadron's doctrinal missions. This monograph begins with a description of the basic precepts of AirLand Battle doctrine. Then the role of the cavalry squadron and specifically its air cavalry organization are examined. Both the H-series division armored cavalry squadron and the J-series AOE cavalry squadron are described, with emphasis on their air cavalry organizations. Based on earlier established criteria the AOE cavalry squadron air organization is analyzed for effectiveness. The H-series cavalry squadron serves as a basis of comparison for most of the analysis. The monograph concludes that the overall reconnaissance capability of the AOE air troop has improved, but problems with command and control and a need for independent operation capability points to design flaws in the AOE division cavalry squadron. Finally, recommendations are offered to resolve the identified problem areas.
