The intrusion of the West began when Vasco Da Gama found the sea route to India in 1498. The process of decolonization set with the withdrawal of British forces from India in 1947 and the European Navy from China in 1949. This period (1498 to 1945) constitutes "a clearly marked epoch of history" presenting a singular unity in its fundamental aspects. The European powers mainly the English, the French, the Portuguese and the Dutch wanted to conquer India but finally the English were successful in this attempt.
