Agroforestry is often considered as an efficient lever to improve long-term sustainability in farming systems and a means to answer crop diversification issues. Nowadays, agronomic research and development centers find interest in those systems as they try to support farmers who wish to create fruit tree-based agroforestry with vegetables. However, in spite of the benefits of agroforestry, the establishment of Vegetable-Agroforestry is growing slowly. The working assumption is based on the action potentials of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur area (France), to support projects of fruit tree-based agroforestry with vegetables. The study, based on a research and development project (SMART) which aims to create references on agroforestry practices in vegetables farming, first characterizes the farmers who associate trees and vegetable production, and their expectations of their institutional environment. From these elements, the study examines the role and actions of territorial actors of the institutional context to understand the overall operation support of the region towards agroforestry in vegetables farming initiatives, and what the prospective development could be.
