The primary purpose of the book is to examine the problems and difficulties in cohesion and coherence encountered by EFL Sudanese learners of English.The secondary purpose is to explore inter-relationships between the frequency of use of cohesive devices (linkers, lexical cohesion, and reference), the achievement of coherence and writing quality. To do this, learners are tested on (a) an explicit cohesion task, where they are needed to supply cohesive devices in sentences and paragraphs and (b) an argumentative essay-writing task. The latter is analyzed for the frequency of use of cohesive devices, the achievement of coherence, and writing quality.
