Spectrophotometry is an instrumental method of analysis that widely adopted where spectrophotometric methods of analysis are still in competition with other techniques applied for pharmaceutical analysis. Because of the lack of specific methods for the determination of amiodarone hydrochloride in the literature, it is worthy to investigate some other methods for its determination and the adaptation of these methods to be available for pharmaceutical preparations. So, the present work aims to develop new simple, accurate and sensitive spectrophotometric methods for the quantitative determination of amiodarone hydrochloride (AM.HCl) in pure form and in pharmaceutical formulations through ion-pair/associate formation reactions with some sulphonphthalein dyes. The reaction conditions were studied and optimized. The methods were successfully applied to the analysis of commercial tablets (Cordarone®). Statistical comparison of the results was performed with regard to accuracy and precision using student's t- and F-tests at 95% confidence level. Also, the kinetics and thermodynamic parameters of hydrolysis of AM.HCl-BCG ion- pair were studied.
