VRML stands for Virtual Reality Modeling Language. VRML is a subset of the Open Inventor standard developed by SGI for their graphics workstation. It is an interpreted language like HTML, JavaScript, or Perl. This means that VRML code can be run on any platform with browser having plugins for that. VRML includes many of the things that go into making a world. It has a way of describing geometry which creates objects and spaces in which you can move around, as well as light, texture and sound which can be approached and viewed from whatever angle. With VRML, you can design interactive 3D worlds without worrying about the complexities of rendering or interacting with low level graphics hardware. Because of this 'worldly' imitation that VRML files get their name.
