The purpose of this book is to provide information oncareer development in the tourism industry. Astourism is still an emerging profession, careers haveyet to be clearly defined and career paths are noteasily identifiable. It is therefore useful toexplore the issues which are important for those whoare currently in the tourism workforce and for thosewho plan to undertake careers in tourism. It isclear that the role of formal education andon-the-job training is important and the need tochange job, organisation, industry or geographicallocation is also influential on the development of acareer in tourism. It is suggested that careers intourism are influenced by a variety of mentoringrelationships and that although structured mentorshipprograms appear to be unavailable to many in thetourism industry, mentorship in the form of informaland networking relationships assists career development.
