Herbert M. Baus was born in 1914 in Indianapolis. Formerly a political campaign manager who delivered California to Richard Nixon in 1960, Baus turned his attention later in life to more varied pursuits, among them restaurant criticism and crossword puzzles. His books include Wine Your Way to Health, Best Restaurants of Orange County, The Expert’s Crossword Puzzle Dictionary, and The Master Crossword Puzzle Dictionary. He died in 1999.
