Experimental design is scholarly science, though its basics are simple enough for fifth-graders to understand, presented here. Results of this plain-English science review are shocking and profound. The problem is simple. In a single-blind drug experiment, participants don't know whether they got the drug or the placebo (saltwater injection here). In a double-blind drug experiment, health-care providers don't know either. Here, participants and providers knew the drug likely produced flu symptoms because the required Consent Form, and supporting Protocol, told them. The saltwater (saline) placebo doesn't usually produce flu symptoms. Injectees getting flu symptoms could figure out they likely got the drug. Injectees not getting flu symptoms could figure out they likely got saltwater. Thus, the participant side of double-blind failed quickly. Required daily symptom reports enabled doctors, nurses, and staff to figure out who likely got the drug and who didn't. Double-blind provider side also failed quickly. Drug experiments are double-blind to rule-out competing explanations for results. Double-blind failures introduce new participant and provider behaviors that become competing explanations for results.
