Codeine is the most commonly abused substance among the youths of Ile-Ife. The ease of obtaining codeine, availability and accessibility has led to its increased abuse among youths. The perception that codeine consumption improves communication skills and self-confidence has enforced the popularity of its abuse among youths in Ile-Ife. Implementation of drug control policies and empowerment of designated agencies (and health personnel) to curb public-unlicensed sale and distribution of substance of abuse, job provision, public enlightenment and education are perceived measures for prevention, reduction and control of substance abuse. All healthcare advocates especially the pharmacist (most commonly in the community pharmacy setting) need to enforce and improve patient education and youth enlighten on the effects and dangers of indulgence in substance abuse.
