This work involves the presentation of new approach attempted to predict the axial capacity and load-settlement behaviour of piles embedded in sand and mixed soils. Two artificial intelligence techniques including Gene Expression Programming (GEP) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been used in the approach. The work begins with the definitions of the two techniques and explanation of their terminology and the theories which each of them is based on. The work also comprises extensive literature review of the proposed procedures for evaluating pile capacity and load settlement behaviour. The application of the artificial intelligence in the work begins with the use of the GEP for modelling the pile capacity. The modelling involves data collection, selection of input variables, data division, determination of setting parameters and GEP model selection and model formulation and validation. Two models are developed, a model for bored piles and two others for driven piles. In the second phase of this work, the artificial neural network utilised for modelling the load-settlement behaviour of the piles.
