Potato is highly responsive to nitrogen fertilization. The impact of the fertilizers on crop yield cannot be denied. Among the plant nutrients, nitrogen fertilization is the most important for potato as it results in the greener and vigorous plants. It enhances the photosynthetic rate ultimately resulting in increased yield potential. Its deficiency causes less growth, reduce light interception, minimize yield and early crop senescence. Thus, it is important to give nitrogen to the potato crop in suitable amount to achieve maximum yield. Balanced nutrition is a pre-requisite for better and higher yield of tuber crops. Besides, potato is also sensitive to management practices. Because of decreasing availability of labour and/or family members at cheaper rate hoeing is getting more and more difficult and expensive. However, hoeing remains an important factor for other management requirements besides weed control. This book contains relevant information and reflects the results of study of response of potato to different levels of nitrogen under different cultural practices.
