When Hitler threatened to bomb London, the government arranged for schoolchildren to be evacuated to the English countryside. Joy Ruth and her older sister Vivienne leave their beloved parents. Being Jewish, they experience the kindness and unkindness of foster-parents. Set in a time of war, this coming-of-age memoir demonstrates that fear, loss, and love are the shards that cut and bind us together.
