John Adair has had a varied and colourful career. He served in the Arab Legion as adjutant of a Bedouin regiment. After Cambridge he became Senior Lecturer in Military Histor and Adviser in Leadership Training at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. In the early '70s he was Visting Fellow, Oxford Centre for Management Studies, and in 1979 became Professor in Leadership Studies at the University of Surrey. He is currently Visiting Professor in Leadership Studies at the University of Exeter. He has worked as a consultant to a wide range of organisations in the UK and overseas, inluding Shell, Exxon Chemicals, Mercedes-Benz and Unilever. Working over a period of almost a decade with ICI, he helped them develop the 'manager-leader' concept, which helped ICI to become the first British company to make one billion pounds profit in 1986.
