Indeed the more people there are on our planet, the higher the demand for resources. Currently, it is alleged that by 2050, the global population count is expected to rise to approximately 9.6 billion. Likewise, Africa's population is set to double by 2050 and therefore unlocking the economic potential of the continent's diverse regions will be vital to meeting the growing demand (AEO, 2015). Interestingly, the highest population growth rates, however, are found in sub-Saharan Africa, where fertility rates actually remain high. For instance, the population in Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, has climbed from 150 million to 212 million (Institute, 2013). There is therefore a growing demand for energy which is partially due to the wide use and dependence on technology. Energy is however not affordable as there is simply a high demand. Energy poverty in these countries can be paralleled with these changes and with global warming on the rise, sustainable solutions are necessary.
