It Happened on Allagash Lake offers readers a thrilling journey into the wilds of Maine, where the protagonist, Mac, seeks solace and perspective in the natural world. Having retired from a career in federal law enforcement and military service, Mac returns to Allagash Lake, a place filled with memories of simpler, more peaceful times. Set against the backdrop of America's current social and political unrest, the book captures the tension and division prevalent in the country. Through Mac's reflective journey, readers are taken on a month-long adventure deep into the wilderness, where the tranquility of nature contrasts sharply with the turmoil of modern society. The story is rich in precise descriptions of the Maine wilderness, with Mac's preparations for the trip, his encounters with wildlife, and his reflections on life forming the core of the story. Along the way, Mac meets Danie, a mysterious and alluring woman who challenges his perspectives and adds a layer of intrigue to his journey. As they explore the lake and its surroundings, the story flows into themes of survival, companionship, and the timeless beauty of nature. The wilderness serves as a metaphor for Mac's internal and external struggles as he contemplates the state of the world and his place in it. The book also includes flashbacks to Mac's time in the military, providing insights into his character and the experiences that shaped him. These flashbacks are meshed with the present-day narrative, creating a complex, layered, wistful, and action-packed story. In It Happened on Allagash Lake, John M. Hamilton composes a tale that is as much about the human spirit and its stability as it is about the beauty and danger of the natural world. With its striking descriptions, engaging characters, and thought-provoking themes, this book is an exciting read for anyone who appreciates a story that blends adventure, military, life's philosophy, and a deep love for the outdoors!

Autorenporträt
John Hamilton was born in 1951 in Millbury, Massachusetts. From as early as he can remember, he had an unusual attraction to the wilderness. Even as a boy, most of his free time was spent fishing, hunting, or exploring the woods. He joined the United States Air Force in 1973 and served as an Air Traffic Controller for 18 years until he was honorably discharged. During that time, he served globally but spent most of his time in Northern Maine, where he qualified as a Master Maine Hunting and Fishing Guide. He also became an accomplished long-line backwoods trapper and pilot. It was in Northern Maine that his love and respect for the wilderness and the animals that inhabited the backwoods inspired him to begin telling nurturing stories about magical animals to his three children. Mr. Hamilton earned a Master of Business Administration degree in Aviation Management and taught as an adjunct faculty professor for several universities. In 1994, he researched, designed, built, and patented a remarkable new in-vessel composting unit to enable livestock industries to turn their waste liabilities into a profitable revenue source. After his tenure with the USAF and his time spent in the private sector as a multi-national businessman, Mr. Hamilton returned to Federal Service. He retired from the Department of Homeland Security as an Immigration Officer in 2021. Although his active participation in trapping has primarily given way to nature photography, he remains an avid outdoorsman to this day.
