As in all or almost all countries, in ours there have long existed parties, groups and movements whose purpose has been the demolition of the existing constitutional regime. However, none had achieved sufficient electoral or political strength to put it at real risk. The existence of large parties with strong electoral support and a comfortable parliamentary majority had been enough to ward off these threats. The tragedy of our times is that these challenges, embodied by independence and extreme left-wing populism, have been joined by a new actor, the new Socialist Party, which today is more appropriately called Sanchismo: some seek the secession of Catalonia and the Basque Country, others long for the overcoming of the current constitutional model and its replacement by another populist model, and the latter simply want to stay in power, and for this they rely on the former at the cost of giving in to their demands. However, the terraces are crowded, the beaches are full on vacations, life goes on... Yes, it is true that the Government may be going too far, some people think, but these alarmisms are exaggerated and, besides, all the parties do the same when they come to power. These unconcerned citizens, those who ignore politics, may believe that all this does not affect them. But it does affect them. It is not the same to live in Venezuela as in Holland, and, if not, let us ask any citizen in which of the two countries they would prefer to live. The authors of this book describe in a rigorous and entertaining style the complex situation Spain is facing and postulate, among other things, the strengthening of State institutions and their guarantee of neutrality, cleaning up the image of Parliament, which has become a mere transmission belt for the Government, and closing the territorial model, which is not sufficiently defined in the distribution of competences. The result is an essential work for the understanding of the current panorama and a well-founded proposal of how to overcome it.
