Although virtual schooling has been in existence since the 1990s, the COVID-19 school closure was an introduction to online learning for many educators and students. As K-12 school districts begin to reopen, and explore the option of offering a full-time virtual schooling option for elementary students, the absence of research and the lack of opportunities for socialization have caused some educational policymakers to doubt this decision. This paper provides school district policymakers with the most relevant and recent research available to help navigate the largely unchartered waters of district-operated virtual schooling for elementary students.
