Four Boats is a compelling story of imagination and vision being fulfilled through years of dedicated labor. It is about Jack, Brian, Rudi and Ray having brought fantasy to reality as they built large boats in the backyard of their home. Chasing one's dreams can also be told as the 'good, the bad and the ugly' of backyard boat building for of every ten home-built boats only three make it to water. Our four boat builders are thus part of a very exclusive club. Included with Jack, Brian, Rudi and Ray's intriguing narratives are stunning photographs that illustrate building of their boats from start of construction to launch. Also offered are snippets of good times and memories these men had sailing on what could easily be construed as marine works of art. There is no stretch to the imagination as to Four Boats being of yacht class. The smallest in this series is 34 feet in length and the largest 70 feet. Building such large boats took years of toil and sweat, but freely given of men considered to be perfectionists in whatever they pursued. Each boat is a true labor of love and a reflection of that attribute. Jack, Brian and Ray sailed their boats in the resplendent waters of the Pacific Northwest, cruising lower Puget Sound upwards to Alaska. Rudi sailed his boat on the beautiful waters of Tasmania and Australia. Brian also followed his original dream and, with his companion Lin Robbins, set out on a six year voyage to exotic South Pacific islands. These blue water sailings are put forth with accompanying photographs that are as splendid and fascinating as those of their boats being built. Four Boats is 161 pages configured in 8 ¿ by 11 inch format to allow larger, more readable print. This book contains over 200 photographs which, with very few exceptions, are in vibrant color.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jack Vander Waal, an octogenarian and novice writer, is also a world traveler with many life experiences to share. Being the owner of an aircraft parts manufacturing plant, since retired, Jack had need to draft numerous business related materials - yet always had a desire to write about something personal. Jack pursued that idea with THE FLYING DUTCHMAN, a book aptly titled because Jace truly is Dutch and upon retiring built himself a jet helicopter. That was followed by the purchase of a light seaplane for which he trained to secure a sport pilot license. Literally, Jack became a flying Dutchman. THE FLYING DUTCHMAN was published in limited quantity for circulation to a large family and larger circle of friends. The book was met with such enthusiasm it became the impetus for Jack to go forward with his writing. A second book, JAAK, was written and is a compelling personal story allowing great insight into life under the German occupation of Holland during WW II. JAAK was followed with a published revised edition that added more attention to Dutch life in general and its history. This book, FOUR BOATS, was written because Mr. Vander Waal is an avid yachtsman with a lifetime of boating tales. FOUR BOATS is no 'sea story' as it is a telling of Jack and three of his friends building large boats in the back yard of their homes. FOUR BOATS starts with Jack's building a 50' power cruiser then continues with how the three other similarly magnificent boats were constructed. Mr. Vander Waal is now engaged in writing a sequel to JAAK. His newest book, yet to be released, is titled ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. It is a narrative of Jack's fifty year successful journey to attain his 'American Dream'. Through his writings Jack Vander Waal has certainly demonstrated there are achievements to be made long after retirement.
