For over thirty years, Jim Vermeulen has coached scholastic middle-distance runners in the upstate New York school district of West Genesee. As head coach for varsity cross-country, indoor track and outdoor track teams, he has worked with thousands of aspiring athletes and coached hundreds of teams that have included state champions and national All-Americans. He is also the editor of the 1989 book of climbing stories, Mountain Journeys, and for the past five years he has been a monthly columnist on high school runners for the NYMilesplit website. Retired from teaching, he continues to coach cross-country and outdoor track teams. He lives in Syracuse, N.Y. with his wife, Marsha.
