At the age of seventeen, he volunteered for the U.S. Navy and was at the San Diego Naval Training Center when Japan surrendered. After the war, Tex enrolled in Anderson College and met his future wife, choosing to get married instead of pursuing a career in baseball. He went on to work as a civil and criminal investigator for a number of years.
