Love in Four Dots is based on coded love letters rich with political intrigue hidden in an 1844 edition of Don Quixote. Two lovers, Sofia and Federico, traded the book back and forth between the military prison and the city of Popayán, Colombia during the One Thousand Days War (1899-1902). It would be their only means of communication for the better half of a year. The novel, while a work of fiction, serves also as a micro-history of this horrendous conflict and its impact on the protagonists, their families and the Colombian people as a whole during this tragic period in the nation's history. Amidst the war, Sofía and Federico developed a means of secret communication: leaving penciled dots between the lines to encode both love notes and strategic plans. Through these letters and the backdrop of history, the author travels in his imagination, filling the voids in the lives of Sofía and Federico, guiding the reader to an unexpected climax that reveals the ties between the characters and the various elements of the plot.
Autorenporträt
Juan M. Garcés was born in Cali, Colombia in 1945. For more than 30 years he worked as a researcher in the chemical industry, yet throughout his career as a scientist Garcés always took time for creative pursuits, be it woodworking or photography, writing or planning and designing his living space. Retirement in 2004 led to a new chapter in life as a writer, catalyzed by a trip to Popayán, the birthplace of both his mother and father. It was then that he began to bring to life what would become his first novel, Amor en cuatro puntos. When not in his basement study, Juan walks the wooded paths near his home accompanied by his telescoping walking stick and enjoying nature, busies himself in the garden, or whips up one of his signature simple - yet delicious - meals in the kitchen, with the same dedication he brought to his professional life as a scientist. Juan lives in Michigan with his wife Linda. The English version of Amor en cuatro puntos, "Love in Four Dots" was published in June 21 of 2022.
