This paper defines a cultural training model based on the background and experience of T.E. Lawrence during WWI. The model is based on a three-phased training program starting with orientation, then acculturation, and finally application. This model provides a useful starting point for the Air Force to develop an in-depth cultural training program ensuring qualified Airmen can meet mission objectives in every region of the globe. This paper compares historical examples from Lawrence's past and identifies attributes and methods that could apply today. In addition, this paper discusses the potential challenges to this model and provides suggestions to help the Air Force implement a more robust cultural awareness program.
