The book "evaluation of the effect of rocuronium bromide on its neuromuscular blocking characteristics by the addition of 7.5% sodium bicarbonate" showed that the overall incidence of withdrawal movement after administration of rocuronium mixed with 7.5% sodium bicarbonate was significantly reduced as compared to rocuronium alone. Also, the onset time of rocuronium in the bicarbonate group was significantly shorter than that in the saline group. Apart from this, mixing of rocuronium bromide with 7.5% sodium bicarbonate has also been found to enhance the potency and prolong the duration of action of rocuronium. From this it is concluded that the addition of 7.5% sodium bicarbonate to rocuronium, not only alleviated injection pain, but also, increased the potency of rocuronium and prolonged its duration of action in comparison to rocuronium alone.
