Inadequate petroleum reserve in the country at present requires increased activity in discovery for more hydrocarbon pools. Recent Technological tools such as organic geochemical tools need to be employed in evaluation of source rock. The Anambra Basin has been known to produce hydrocarbon, evaluation of the source rocks in the basin requires detailed organic geochemical analysis to determine the quantity, quality and thermal maturation of the source rocks especially the Nkporo and Enugu Shales. These problems became the basis for this study on the comparative evaluation of the hydrocarbon potentials in Nkporo and Enugu Shales in the Anambra basin. The geochemical analysis carried out at the cost of this work proved that the both shales from good source rock and rich in organic matter, by exceeding the threshold of 0.5%wt for fine grain sediments. The kerogen Type ranges from Type IV and II, Leru and Ivo from Nkporo Shale. And Type II/III and III, Emene Junction and Enugu New market from Enugu shales respectively. The Thermal maturity shows mature and immature status in the both shales. However their similarities attested for their lateral equivalents.
