Synergies, Stalemates and Social Dilemmas explores the outcomes of the South African governance reforms of the late 1990s from comparative and historical perspectives. It also develops a theory of governance, by means of which it compares the long-term development of different governance regimes in Europe and Africa with the South African development from the period of early colonization. In the latter half of the 1990s, South Africa introduced a state of the art political system heavily influenced by various international trends and European reform experiences. The author argues that the implanting of European policies in South Africa - a setting with a very different history from that of Western Europe - has entailed a number of unintended and unwelcome consequences. This book provides a distinctive outlook on issues regarding democratic consolidation, governance, institutional reform, policymaking and implementation, and the development of South Africa after the democratic transition. It will appeal to a wide readership of students of history, politics, sociology and institutional economics.
