"...une question se pose : fallait-il une nouvelle édition traduite en anglo-américain ? La réponse est « oui », pour au moins trois raisons. La première est technique. Papier permanent d'une blancheur irréprochable, typographie lumineuse, mise en page soignée, tableaux aérés, planches d'une belle facture, bibliographie et index faciles à consulter : cette nouvelle édition offre un confort de lecture exceptionnel. La deuxième raison est linguistique. On peut le déplorer, mais nul ne contestera que l'anglo-américain est devenu la lingua franca de la recherche scientifique ; cette édition met ainsi la magnum opus de Nöldeke à la disposition de la communauté des chercheurs internationaux. Il y a enfin une raison littéraire : l'élégante traduction de W. H. Behn se lit avec plaisir et apporte au texte une nouvelle clarté.
