It is a widely known fact that Henry David Thoreau s
main works sprang of real autobiographical events;
they are fruits of deep, personal convictions.
Still, these exclusively private perceptions in
connection with the America of the 1850 s resound
with a stunning actuality today, in the 21st
century. In my work therefore I tried to highlight
those aspects of Thoreau s creeds and world view,
which carry pertinent messages for the readers of
our days. His book s reading as social criticism and
also as solution to the negative aspects he points
out constitutes the core of my thesis, and the
marrow of his most timely advices. Thoreau s search
for a kind of absolute personal freedom closely
relates to the inspiring force of his Civil
Disobedience, indeed a most influential political
writing. My book, besides enriching the vast field
of Thoreau studies, is aiming at an exploration of
his ideas from a social point of view, it tries to
hold a mirror to them from the perspective of our
very days, and thus it speaks to every socially
aware reader.
