This book gives a fascinating account of Switzerland's rich heritage of dance and song - a heritage to which all the four races of the Swiss have contributed their varying shares. The clog dances of the Alpine cowherds and their well-known yodelling songs, the simple, flowing Valse Frappée of Geneva, and the gay Lüderen Polka have been part of Swiss village life for many hundreds of years. These and many other dances, and their place in Swiss folk life, are described by the author in an introductory essay; in addition, four typical dances are selected for more detailed description, with music and step-notation, and four delightful colour plates show the correct costume for each. Mlle. Witzig was General Secretary of the Swiss National Costume Society and had always had a love of the old Swiss customs and folklore; her Society has done much good work in the preservation of dance and costumes.
