Many strategies for sustainable tourism have been proposed by various authors in recent decades and the importance of participation or community involvement has also been emphasized. Emerging strategies of sustainable tourism are discussed here, focusing mainly on factors that influence their success or failure as well as community involvement for reaching sustainable tourism. Generally, most of the strategies noted success factors such as collaborations with government authorities and proper organization, management and compliance to principles. The popular failure factors noted include political instability, lack of government support and centralized political systems. Participation has generally been an effective concept that facilitate the success of sustainable tourism concepts. However, communities involved in sustainable tourism benefit from their natural resources and community attachment has been considered as a success factor.
