In Fire in the Wind, Part One of The Burn, the past intrudes violently on the present. To outward appearances, Maryl O'Donnell is a smart-mouthed teenager in an otherwise typical small town, middle class family. But a series of attacks from an unknown vandal increase tension in the O'Donnell household, leading to disclosures about skeletons in the closet that would be better left unfound. As violent events unfold, Maryl finds herself increasingly in danger from someone she thought was long dead - not a sweet memory from the past, but an evil presence out for revenge. A Shot in the Dark finds Maryl in college, playing soccer and working at a short-order restaurant. She has resumed a relationship with a former boyfriend, who has been pressuring her to take their relationship to the "next level," while her coach seems more interested in her off-field life than is appropriate. To make matters worse, a young man she helped put in a secure facility has been released and wastes no time renewing his vengeful ways. In attempting to deal with these issues, Maryl is forced to make choices she never thought she would have to make and defend herself against threats to her integrity as well as to her life.
