Knee Joint is the largest and the most complex joint in the human body. Knee joint is subjected to degenerative diseases in the elderly. These diseases lead to the total degeneration of the meniscus in the knee which in turn results to the rubbing of the bones in the knee joint. The rubbing of bones causes enormous amount of pain. Total knee arthroplasty is the end stage surgical procedure for pain relief in degenerative diseases like arthritis. The articulating surfaces in the knee joint are replaced by metal components and the meniscus is replaced by a plastic spacer. The entire metal and the plastic spacer together are called the Artificial Knee. There are many models of artificial knee, which had been designed so far in 5 to 6 decades of arthroplasty history. This book details a research which was aimed to design an artificial knee customized for eastern lifestyles, which emphasizes the high flexion- extension range of over 125 degrees. This high flexion can provide the comfort of squatting/ semi squatting even after the Total Knee Replacement [TKR].
