Covered Bridges in Virginia is a book to provide documentation of the eight remaining historic timber covered bridges and a ninth one that was washed away by flood waters when Hurricane Fran swept thru central Virginia. Included are all known facts, age, size, plats defining sites, and items of interest (usually as excerpts from newspaper articles). Much genealogy of families who had them built and stories about them passed down thru generations is recorded along with remembrances of elders who are still living. The actual builders have their stories to tell about the type of construction and other structural data. Many photographs are furnished to point out structural members of each bridge so the reader will become familiar with the terms used to the point of educating himself in a pleasant manner in a storybook of actual covered bridges with their individual characteristics recorded on film. One thing can be sure: Readers will become aware of these relics of the past and the important part they played in the development of our country.
