The object of the present volume is to try and fill this want at a price within the reach of the ordinary soldier-sportsman of India, and to give an idea of the appearance and habits of the various species, with advice as to the best way of setting out to shoot them. Questions of cost have therefore necessarily limited the size of the book, and elaborate life histories and descriptions, with full bibliological references, have had to be omitted. The book is intended primarily for the man of limited means who follows his game on foot, and wants to obtain the essence of sport by doing his following up and finding himself.
