The book, primarily, deals with the author's academic journey starting with his early education in India followed by study and research in the Netherlands and at Chatham House in London and teaching in Aligarh Muslim University, Indian School of International Studies and Jawaharlal Nehru University. In between, he spent an academic year at the Middle East institute of Columbia University in New York. The study also dwells upon the author's own academic work on contemporary West Asian history and politics, necessitating extensive field-work and offering a closer view of the causes and consequences of the area's major upheavals spanning the shifting fortunes of Arab nationalism, the Islamic backlash and the Iranian revolution, and compounded by the impact of its oil wealth which had turned the whole region into an arena of fierce international competition and conflict. On yet another plane, the study highlights the promise and performance of the Jawaharlal Nehru University as an innovative venture in higher education.
