This book is a guide to the history of literary criticism from antiquity to the present day. It not only provides an overview of the major movements, figures, and texts of literary criticism, but also supplies the cultural, historical, and philosophical background which enables students to see them in context. The organization of the book is broadly chronological. Starting with a comprehensive section on classical literary criticism, it shows how the central philosophical principles of Plato and Aristotle not only underlie their specific comments on literature, but also lay out the foundations and categories of much subsequent Western thought. Similarly, for each subsequent period, the book combines back ground information, whether on the philosophy of Locke, the history of the French Revolution, the political theories of Marx and Engels, or Freud's views on civilization withy coverage of the major figures and texts of literary-critical thought.

Rezensionen
Winner of a 2006 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Award

"[A] magnificently comprehensive history of literarycriticism. Authoritative, formidable, generous and compassionate... Habib's achievements are many, but two stand out. The firstis the putting of theory into historical perspective and the secondis to make connections between criticism andphilosophy."
Times Higher Education Supplement

"This is a book to be read cover to cover, and those whoundertake that happy task will be better informed. They willunderstand the twin pillars of Western civilization, Hellenism andthe Judaic Christian ethic. They will understand the intersectionsof philosophy, literature, and religion. They will understandPlato, Aristotle, the Age of Enlightenment, Romanticism, and thethree great thinkers who forever shifted thought at the beginningof the 20th century: Marx, Freud, and Darwin. Dividing thediscussion into eight chronological sections, from ancient Greeceto the 20th century, Habib (English, Rutgers Univ.) discusses eachperiod in detail, exploring major critical figures and their worksin a way that illuminates, rather than exhausts, the issues theyare concerned with. His explorations entice one to read more, andthat is the best kind of criticism. Summing Up: Essential. Allreaders; all levels."

"Rafey Habib's History of Literary Criticism, withits substantial grounding in classical texts and its excellentcoverage of contemporary criticism and theory, is certain to be ashighly regarded as Wimsatt and Brooks' Literary Criticism: AShort History. Habib's lucidity and wit will also make his bookhighly teachable."
Michael Payne, Bucknell University

"This huge undertaking offers a comprehensive, expository andlucid account - including close readings of selected formativetexts - of the history of literary criticism and theory from theearliest western classics to influential contemporary movements, while also embedding these in their broader social, cultural andphilosophical contexts. A major resource - as narrative or ascompendium - for students at all levels."
Peter Widdowson, University of Gloucestershire

"Beginning with Plato and Aristotle, Habib traces how the studyof literature evolved in the West. His strength lies in his shortsegments, which allow readers to absorb the major thoughts of thecritics and movements without being overwhelmed. While the bookruns nearly 900 pages, it is easy to maneuver. All told, Habibdelivers an accessible yet scholarly survey of literarycriticism."
Ron Ratliff, Kansas State University
