High performance electric motor drives are considered an essential requirement for modern industrial applications. Accurate speed information is necessary to realize high performance and high-precision speed control of induction motor drives. Direct speed sensors imply additional electronics, extra wiring, extra space, frequent maintenance and careful mounting which detracts from the inherent robustness and reliability of the drive, and an extra cost.
