Nowadays, Poland is the largest coal producer in the European Union. The current crisis in this industry is viewed mainly from the perspective of the global decline in oil prices and overproduction, but the internal causes of the crisis are also important. The crises have their internal causes arising from local conditions, management and applied technology. The major crisis the Polish coal industry finds itself makes it necessary to perform a thorough analysis of the industry's current status as well as the effectiveness of its activities, errors and failings in the restructuring processes in the context of the real conditions of operations. Only a thorough analysis can allow for effective corrective action to be taken. In this publication, the aim is to draw the reader's attention to selected sources of the current crisis in the Polish hard coal mining. The authors focused particularly on the organisational aspects within the area of human capital management and the expected level of performance and work time. The aim of the authors of this publication was not to assess corrective actions, but to draw attention to selected ideas of improvement for the current situation.
