It is the first and foremost duty of the state to promote communal harmony among the people. The constitution of India guaranteed freedom of religion under Article 25 to 28. However, number of conflicts has arisen with regard to Article 25 between belief and practice of religion. In the light of several past religious conflicts among different religions in India has become necessary to review the religious practices and see whether such practices are consistent with the aims and objects of a secular state. This book is purely based on theoretical aspect. The entire book has been designed into six chapters. The study has discussed mainly about the evolution of freedom of religion during the Pre-Independent and Post- Independent eras, examined the right of freedom of religion vis-à-vis the power of the state to regulate the same and traced out the role of Judiciary in strengthening the secular character of the state.
