The disturbed conditions existing in the Kashmir valley since 1990, due to the onset of militancy led to the mass exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits and some families belonging to Sikh and Muslim communities. The number of such families was estimated around 57000. Most of the families got settled or sought refuge in and around Jammu city and some in the other states of the country.
