The disturbed conditions existing in the Kashmir valley since 1990, due to the onset of militancy led to the mass exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits and some families belonging to Sikh and Muslim communities. The number of such families was estimated around 57000. Most of the families got settled or sought refuge in and around Jammu city and some in the other states of the country. Uprooting of such families from their homes and hearths as a result of the turmoil in the valley caused an all round upheavel leading to various unfortunate developments at the state, national and international levels.
