It gives a unique insight into the world of diplomacy and power politics and the way they impact upon ordinary human lives, suggesting that it is civil society not government that ultimately stabilises countries and unearths the truth about conflict and the ill-treatment of civilians at the hand of state forces.

Mark Muller Stuart QC is a senior advocate who specialises in human rights and public international law, advising international bodies on humanitarian issues and conflict resolution. He is a senior mediation advisor to the United Nations Department of Political Affairs and has conducted international missions throughout the Middle East, Asia and Africa. He is also founder of Beyond Borders, a Scottish not-for-profit organisation dedicated to fostering peace and international exchange. Mark has written a number of books and reports on human rights and conflict-related issues, and is an associate tenant/member of Doughty Street Chambers.
