The EU-NATO relationship continues to develop at a time of significant change for both organizations. Post 9/11, NATO embarked on a fundamental transformation, recasting itself as an organization with global strategic reach and interest, focused less on Europe than ever before. At the same time, the EU is also becoming a more global political actor. Consequently, there is growing evidence that over time the EU will take the primary place in providing military security in Europe. This volume combines political and legal methods to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current and likely future relationship between the EU and NATO. The work will be of interest to all those interested in the development of these two major organizations and international security more generally, whether from a political or legal perspective.

Rezensionen
'The relationship between NATO and the EU is evolving rapidly. Martin Reichard's thorough analysis guides us in understanding the newly emerging security landscape.' Atis LejinÅ¡, Latvian Institute of International Affairs, Latvia 'Martin Reichard's book illuminates the changing relationship between the EU and NATO by examining each institution's internal drivers of change as well as their inter-relationship. Fruitfully combining practical and political with legal perspectives, he correctly sees more weight shifting to the EU's shoulders especially in the European security theatre - but the interplay with NATO will be a dynamic and demanding one for a good while yet.' Alyson J. K. Bailes, Director, SIPRI, Sweden 'Dr Martin Reichard's book, The EU-NATO Relationship: A Legal and Political Perspective meets the highest academic standards on an issue which is of great importance to the security of Europe. Although the matter he deals with is a complex one, his treatment is both expert and readable.' Francois Heisbourg, Chairman, Geneva Centre for Security Policy, Switzerland, Chairman, Council of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), UK and Special Advisor for the Fondation pour la Recherche Stratégique, France '...Reichard's work constitutes an important contribution to the study of the ESDP and of the European security architecture more generally. The book is well-written and...offers an excellent overview of the political and strategic context of the EU-NATO relationship...it deserves to be widely read both by international relations specialists and by international lawyers.' Common Market Law Review 'Commendably comprehensive in its scope and meticulous in its research, the book offers an impressive analysis of the issues at stake, the author having tracked down all manner of official documnets and academic articles relating to the subject...this is a highly useful and important volume that will serve as an excellent reference work for…mehr
